History
In 1866 the property on which the university is located was bought by Henry Durant in his goal of building a private school. Due to financial problems, Durant accepted the interference of the state of California and the result was the union of the initial project, with a public school that the government had promoted.
It was opened in Oakland in 1868, and moved to its current site five years later, following the construction of the first buildings on the campus, which at that time had a student body of 167 men and 222 women.
The university first received worldwide attention during the early and mid- 20th century, when it experienced a golden age in the physical, chemical, and biological sciences. In 1952 the university obtained a level of autonomy from the central committee of the University of California. This partial independence was also granted to the other universities in the system.
Due to the movement for free expression and opposition to the Vietnam War, movements that changed the moral and political landscape of the 1960s, the University gained a reputation that made it the most famous center of the American university left. He is culturally recognized in the US for his activism, leftism, and vanguardism.
