According to medicinelearners, Buckingham County, Virginia was formed in 1761 from Albemarle County. It was named after the Duke of Buckingham, who had been a major supporter of the American colonies during their struggle for independence. The county seat is the town of Buckingham, which was founded in 1762. The county has a rich history that includes contributions from Native Americans and African Americans. The first settlers in the area were Native Americans who were living in the area prior to European settlement. Later, African-American slaves were brought to work on the plantations that began to spring up throughout the region. In 1851, Buckingham County became known for its tobacco production and continued to be an important part of Virginia’s agricultural economy until the beginning of World War II. During this time period, many new industries began to develop in and around Buckingham County, providing jobs and economic stability for its citizens. By 1950, many of these industries had become well-established and provided employment opportunities for thousands of people living in Buckingham County. Today, Buckingham County is an important part of Virginia’s economy due to its diverse industry base which includes healthcare services, education and government services as well as manufacturing facilities and numerous small businesses. It is also home to several historical sites including James Madison’s Montpelier estate as well as numerous Civil War battlefields that are now preserved by state parks or open fields. The Buckingham County Public Schools district serves the educational needs of the county’s students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The district is composed of two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. All of these schools are located in the town of Buckingham, which is also home to the county’s administrative offices. The elementary schools are Buckingham Primary and Buckingham Elementary, which serve students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade. These schools provide a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on core academic subjects such as mathematics, science, reading and writing as well as social studies and physical education. In addition to providing a strong academic foundation for their students, these schools also offer enrichment programs such as music, art and foreign language classes. The middle school is Dillwyn Middle School which serves students in grades 6-8. This school provides its students with a rigorous curriculum that focuses on challenging them academically while still providing a wide variety of extracurricular activities and clubs for them to participate in. Finally, there is Buckingham High School which serves students in grades 9-12. This school offers a comprehensive curriculum that prepares its graduates for both college and career readiness. In addition to its core academic offerings, this school also provides numerous extracurricular activities such as sports teams, performing arts groups and student clubs that allow its students to explore their interests outside of the classroom while still receiving an excellent education.
