In 1718, the Spanish government established a military outpost called San Antonio de Béxar in the area that would later become Bexar County. The outpost was intended to protect Spain’s interests in the region and to enable them to expand their influence further north. In 1821, Mexico declared its independence from Spain, and San Antonio de Béxar became part of the newly formed Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. During this time period, many famous battles were fought on Bexar County soil such as The Battle of San Jacinto (1836) which secured Texas’ independence from Mexico; The Battle of Salado Creek (1842) between Texan troops led by General Edward Burleson against Mexican forces; The Battle of Perez’s Ranch (1845) during which General Zachary Taylor defeated Mexican troops; and finally The Siege of Béxar (1835) led by Stephen F Austin against Mexican troops who were occupying San Antonio at that time. Throughout its history Bexar County has been home to many prominent figures such as Davy Crockett who served briefly as mayor of San Antonio before leaving for Tennessee; Stephen F Austin who is known as “The Father Of Texas”; Sam Houston who served twice as president of the Republic Of Texas; William Barret Travis who defended The Alamo during its siege; Henry Smith who served briefly as governor during Republic Of Texas times; Josephus Stevens Chickasaw Nation leader; John Reagan United States Postmaster General under President Grover Cleveland; Oveta Culp Hobby first female Secretary Of Health Education And Welfare; and many others. The Bexar County school district is one of the largest and most diverse districts in Texas. It encompasses over 130 schools, including traditional public schools, charter schools, magnet schools, and private schools. The district also provides a variety of educational options for students such as advanced placement classes, dual credit courses, and career and technical education courses. The district is divided into seven local education agencies (LEAs) which are based on geographical region. Each LEA has its own superintendent and board of trustees who are responsible for overseeing the educational programs within their respective areas. The Superintendent of Bexar County Schools serves as the chief executive officer for the entire district. Bexar County Schools offer a comprehensive curriculum that meets both state and national standards in order to ensure that all students receive an excellent education. Students have access to a wide range of course offerings that include core academic subjects such as math, science, English language arts, social studies, foreign languages, physical education and health. In addition to these core classes, students can select from elective courses that focus on technology and business skills or pursue specialized programs such as fine arts or career-oriented pathways like engineering or health sciences.
