According to medicinelearners, Corson County, South Dakota is a rural county located in the extreme northwestern corner of the state. It was created in 1883 and named after Alexander G. Corson, a former territorial legislator. The county seat is McIntosh, which was established in 1884. The county covers an area of 1,664 square miles and has an estimated population of 2,800 people. The area now known as Corson County has long been home to Native American tribes such as the Oglala Sioux and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes. These tribes were forced to relocate from their traditional lands during the late 1800s due to encroaching settlers and government-mandated relocations. In 1868 a treaty was signed between the U.S government and several Sioux tribes which allowed for some land in present-day Corson County to be set aside for Native American use. In the early 1900s much of present-day Corson County was used for homesteading by European immigrants who had traveled west looking for better opportunities than they could find back east. These homesteaders quickly established small farms along with other businesses such as general stores, blacksmith shops, saloons and post offices which helped to create a thriving agricultural economy in the area. Today, Corson County is still largely rural with its main economic activities being agriculture and tourism. Agriculture remains an important component of life here with ranching operations raising beef cattle being common throughout the region while crop production such as wheat and corn are also important sources of income for local farmers. Tourism has become increasingly important in recent years with hunting, fishing, camping and boating all popular activities among visitors to the area. Corson County is also home to several small towns including Dupree, McLaughlin and Meadow which offer local amenities such as restaurants, stores, banks and schools while larger cities like Pierre offer more extensive services like hospitals or universities located just over one hour away from most locations within Corson County’s borders. All in all, this sparsely populated rural county offers visitors plenty of natural beauty combined with a unique western charm making it an ideal destination for those looking for something off the beaten path. The school district of Corson County, South Dakota is comprised of four public school districts and two private schools. The public school districts are Corson County School District #1, located in McLaughlin; Corson County School District #2, located in Dupree; Corson County School District #3, located in Meadow; and Corson County School District #4, located in North Eagle Butte. Each of the four public school districts have elementary schools and high schools with the exception of North Eagle Butte which only has an elementary school. The two private schools in Corson County are St. Mary’s Catholic School, located in McLaughlin and Faith Christian Academy, located in Dupree. Both private schools are K-12 institutions offering a faith-based educational experience to students who choose to attend them. In terms of student population, all six schools combined serve approximately 1,400 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The majority of these students attend one of the four public school districts with an average enrollment at each district ranging from 280 to 400 students per year. The two private schools combined serve roughly 200 students per year with St. Mary’s Catholic School enrolling slightly more than Faith Christian Academy on average each year. Corson County is also served by several higher education institutions including Sitting Bull College and Sinte Gleska University which offer a variety of degree programs to local residents looking for further educational opportunities beyond high school graduation or GED completion. All together this diverse educational landscape serves the needs of area residents both young and old providing them with the skills necessary to succeed both within their communities as well as beyond its borders.
