According to medicinelearners, Colleton County, South Carolina is located in the Lowcountry region of the southeastern United States. It borders Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties. The county was formed in 1769 from a portion of St. Bartholomew’s Parish and was named for Sir John Colleton, one of the eight Lords Proprietor of the Province of Carolina. The county seat is Walterboro. The area that is now Colleton County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Cusabo, Edisto, and Sewee before being settled by Europeans in the late 1600s. In 1706, colonists established a land grant near present day Jacksonboro which served as a trading post and military outpost during the French and Indian War. During this time period, many settlers came to the area to establish plantations which relied on slave labor for their operations. In 1782 during the Revolutionary War, British forces occupied Colleton County for several months until they were driven out by American forces led by General Francis Marion (the “Swamp Fox”). Afterward, many freed slaves moved to the area which led to an increase in population. In 1868 after Reconstruction ended following the Civil War, Colleton County experienced a period of economic decline due to declining cotton prices and soil depletion from overuse of land for agriculture. Many African Americans left during this time period as well due to poor wages and racial discrimination. The economy began to recover in 1890 when phosphate mining began in earnest in Colleton County; this industry would dominate its economy until it declined after World War II due to competition from foreign sources of phosphate ore. By this time tourism had become an important part of its economy as well due to its proximity to Charleston and other tourist destinations along the coast such as Beaufort and Hilton Head Island. Today, tourism continues to be an important part of Colleton County’s economy due to its beaches along Edisto Island State Park as well as its historic sites such as Magnolia Plantation & Gardens and Middleton Place Plantation & Gardens which attract visitors from all over the world each year.
