It was established in 1883 and named after General Alexander Emmons, who fought for the Union during the Civil War. The county spans an area of 1,211 square miles and is home to a population of over 4,500 people. The history of Emmons County dates back to 1872 when the first settlers arrived in what would become Fort Rice. The fort was established to protect travelers from Native American attacks during westward expansion. As more settlers moved into the area, they began to establish small towns and communities that eventually became part of Emmons County. In 1883, when Emmons County was officially formed it included parts of what are now Grant and Sheridan Counties. Over time, the boundaries shifted as more settlers moved into the area and new counties were created. By 1910, Emmons County had reached its current boundaries and included parts of McLean and Logan Counties as well as Grant and Sheridan Counties. Today, Emmons County is home to a variety of different industries including agriculture, manufacturing, energy production, tourism, retail and service businesses. Agriculture is one of the main sources of income for residents with wheat being one of the most commonly grown crops along with corn and soybeans. The county also has numerous energy production facilities such as wind turbines which help provide electricity for residents throughout North Dakota. Emmons County has a rich history that dates back over 140 years ago when it was first established by settlers looking for new opportunities in a new land. Today, it is still home to a variety of different industries that help provide jobs for its citizens while also helping to preserve its rich history and culture. The Emmons County School District consists of two high schools, two middle schools, and eight elementary schools. The district serves the communities of Linton, Strasburg, Hazelton, and Lehr. The district provides education for over 1,500 students in grades Pre-K through 12th grade. The district is made up of a dedicated team of teachers and staff who work hard to ensure the best educational experience for all students. All schools strive to provide a safe learning environment that encourages creativity and developing critical thinking skills.
