According to medicinelearners, Lincoln County, New Mexico is a county located in the south of the state, on the borders of Texas and Mexico. It was formed in 1869 and named after President Abraham Lincoln. The county seat is Carrizozo, and the largest city is Ruidoso. The area now known as Lincoln County has been home to Native Americans for centuries. Ancient petroglyphs left by the Mescalero Apache can be found throughout the county. In 1598, Spanish explorer Juan de Oñate passed through Lincoln County on his way to colonize New Mexico. In 1866, during the American Civil War, Confederate troops from Texas invaded New Mexico in an attempt to capture Santa Fe and Albuquerque. However, they were pushed back by Union forces at Glorieta Pass near present-day Pecos. This battle effectively ended Confederate control in New Mexico and led to the formation of Lincoln County two years later. In 1880, cattle ranching began in earnest in Lincoln County with the establishment of several large ranches such as those owned by John Chisum and James J. Hagermann. Cattle ranching remains a major industry in Lincoln County today along with tourism due to its unique natural beauty which includes mountains, valleys, rivers and deserts as well as popular attractions such as Smokey Bear State Park and Ski Apache ski resort near Ruidoso. From its beginnings as a wild frontier territory during the days of Spanish exploration up until today’s vibrant mix of agriculture and tourism industries – Lincoln County has always been an area rich with culture and history that continues to evolve over time while still maintaining its unique identity within New Mexico’s diverse landscape. The school district of Lincoln County, New Mexico consists of five public school districts and one private school. The five public school districts are the Carrizozo Municipal School District, Capitan Municipal School District, Corona Municipal School District, Ruidoso Municipal School District and Hondo Valley Schools. The private school is the Sacred Heart Catholic School. The Carrizozo Municipal School District serves students from grades PreK-12 and is located in the county seat of Carrizozo. It operates one elementary school, one middle school and one high school. The district also offers a variety of programs such as special education services, advanced placement courses, career and technical education as well as a dual language program for Spanish-speaking students. The Capitan Municipal School District serves students from PreK-12 in the village of Capitan and operates one elementary/middle school and one high school. It also offers an afterschool program for students in grades K-8 called the Capitan Kid’s Club. The Corona Municipal School District serves students from PreK-12 in the village of Corona and operates one elementary/middle school and one high school. It also offers a variety of programs such as special education services, advanced placement courses, career and technical education as well as a dual language program for Spanish-speaking students. The Ruidoso Municipal School District serves students from PreK-12 in the village of Ruidoso and operates two elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and two alternative schools. The district also offers a variety of programs such as special education services, advanced placement courses, career and technical education as well as a dual language program for Spanish-speaking students. The Hondo Valley Schools serve students from PreK-12 in the village of Hondo and operates an elementary/middle school and a high school. It also offers an afterschool program for students in grades K-8 called the Hondo Valley Kid’s Club. Finally, Sacred Heart Catholic School serves students from grades PreK-8 in Lincoln County with its traditional Catholic educational values. The curriculum is based on Catholic teachings with an emphasis on developing strong moral values while providing academic excellence to its student body.
