According to medicinelearners, Clearwater County, Minnesota was first settled in 1869 by a group of homesteaders from the East Coast. The county was organized in 1872 and named for its many clear lakes and rivers. The original settlers were mostly farmers, but the county quickly grew to include lumber production, mining and tourism. The railroad came to Clearwater County in 1887, connecting it to other parts of the state and helping to spur on economic growth. By 1900, the population had grown to over 8,000 people. The lumber industry continued to be important into the 1900s, with several large sawmills operating in Clearwater County. In addition, mining operations provided jobs for many of the county’s residents. Copper was mined in several locations throughout the area while iron ore was mined near Bagley and Kettle River. Tourism also played an important role in Clearwater County’s economy during this time period as more people discovered its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Hotels were built around many of its lakes as well as resorts that catered to both summer and winter guests. In addition, hunting lodges became popular destinations for sportsmen from all over the country. By 1950, Clearwater County had grown to over 14,000 people who benefited from its diverse economy and recreational opportunities that drew visitors from across Minnesota and beyond. The Clearwater County school district consists of five public school districts, including the Bagley Public School District, Clearbrook-Gonvick Public School District, Kelliher Public School District, Northome Public School District and Red Lake Falls Public School District. The districts cover a large geographic area and serve students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Each district has its own board of education and administration that works to provide students with a quality education. In addition to the public school districts, Clearwater County is home to several private schools and religious schools. These include the Clearwater Academy, a Christian school offering elementary through high school; St. Mary’s Catholic School in Red Lake Falls; and Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School in Baudette. Each of these schools offer a unique educational experience to their students while still providing the same quality education as their public school counterparts. The Clearwater County Schools strive to provide students with a well-rounded education that includes core academic classes such as math, science and language arts as well as elective courses in music, art and technology. The districts also offer numerous extracurricular activities such as athletics, clubs and student organizations that allow students to explore their interests outside of the classroom.
