According to medicinelearners, Charlevoix County, Michigan is located on the eastern side of the Lower Peninsula and is home to the cities of Charlevoix, East Jordan, and Boyne City. It is bordered by Emmet County to the north, Antrim County to the west, Cheboygan County to the south, and Lake Michigan to the east. The county has a total area of 1,184 square miles and a population of 25,943 people according to 2019 estimates. The history of Charlevoix County dates back centuries before Europeans arrived in North America. The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans such as Ojibwe and Ottawa tribes who had been living in the region for thousands of years prior to European settlement. The first Europeans to arrive in the region were French fur traders who established trading posts in what is now Boyne City in 1820-1830s. This led to further settlement by French-Canadians as well as Scots-Irish immigrants from Ireland who settled along Lake Charlevoix’s shoreline. The area was organized into Charlevoix County in 1853 and was named after Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, a French explorer who visited the region in 1721-1722. In 1859, East Jordan was established as its county seat after being platted by William Farrand Stewart with assistance from John Biddleman in 1856. Throughout its history, Charlevoix County has been an agricultural community with fishing also playing an important role due to its proximity to Lake Michigan. In recent years it has become increasingly popular with tourists due to its beautiful landscapes and recreational opportunities such as boating, fishing, hunting and skiing among others. Today, Charlevoix County is known for its picturesque landscapes including rolling hills covered with forests as well as pristine lakeside towns that attract visitors from all over Michigan and beyond for vacationing or relaxation purposes throughout all four seasons of the year. It is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts looking for adventure or those simply wanting a quiet weekend getaway surrounded by nature’s beauty. Charlevoix County is served by five public school districts, each with its own unique mission and goals. The Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District (CEISD) is the largest district in the county and serves both Charlevoix and Emmet counties. It offers a variety of educational programs for students from kindergarten through grade 12, including special education services. It also provides support services such as professional development, technology services, and educational partnerships with local businesses. The district has an enrollment of over 6,000 students and operates thirteen schools throughout the county including elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, alternative education centers and adult education centers. The Charlevoix Public Schools District covers the city of Charlevoix and serves around 1,700 students in grades K-12. This district offers a wide range of educational programs to meet the needs of all students including Advanced Placement (AP) classes as well as college credit courses through Northern Michigan University and Grand Valley State University. The East Jordan Public Schools District encompasses East Jordan as well as parts of Boyne City and serves around 1,400 students in grades K-12. This district offers a variety of academic programs to meet the needs of all learners including dual enrollment courses with North Central Michigan College. The Boyne City Public Schools District covers most of Boyne City as well as surrounding areas such as Walloon Lake and Horton Bay serving around 1,100 students in grades K-12. This district provides rigorous academic instruction along with enrichment opportunities like foreign language classes and art classes for all grade levels. Finally, the Central Lake Public Schools District covers Central Lake along with nearby townships such as Ellsworth serving nearly 800 students in grades K-12. This district provides quality education to both traditional learners and those who need more specialized instruction through its special education program which includes both general education classes for those needing additional assistance along with life skills classes for those who require more intensive support services. Overall, Charlevoix County is served by five excellent school districts that provide quality educational opportunities to its residents no matter their age or learning needs while also offering enrichment activities to enrich their learning experience even further.
