According to medicinelearners, Dearborn County, Indiana is a county located in the southeastern part of the state. It was established in 1803 and named after General Henry Dearborn, who was Secretary of War under President Thomas Jefferson. The county’s population is currently around 50,000 people. The area that would become Dearborn County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Miami, Piankeshaw and Shawnee. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1800s, many of them coming from Pennsylvania and other eastern states. These settlers quickly established small farming communities throughout the region. During the Civil War, Dearborn County was on the front lines of the conflict with numerous battles taking place in its borders. In addition to serving as a battleground for Union and Confederate forces, it also provided resources for both sides including food, clothing and medical supplies. In 1856, Lawrenceburg became the county seat for Dearborn County and remains so to this day. Over time, more towns were established throughout the county including Aurora and Dillsboro which remain popular destinations today for tourists visiting Indiana’s southeastern region. Throughout its history, Dearborn County has been known for its agriculture production including corn, wheat and soybeans as well as livestock such as cows and hogs. Today, agriculture still plays an important role in the local economy while tourism is becoming increasingly popular thanks to attractions such as historic sites like Fort Sackville and cultural centers like The Aurora Arts Center & Gallery. Dearborn County, Indiana is home to two school districts: the South Dearborn Community School Corporation and the Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corporation. Both districts serve students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, providing quality education to over 12,000 students in the county. The South Dearborn Community School Corporation serves nine schools located in Aurora, Moores Hill and Lawrenceburg. The district offers a wide range of programs and services including advanced placement classes, career and technical education courses and a gifted program. In addition to its academic offerings, the district also provides extracurricular activities such as sports teams, student clubs and performing arts groups. The Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corporation serves seven schools located in Sunman, Dillsboro and Manchester Township. It strives to provide an excellent education for all its students by offering challenging curriculum as well as advanced programs for gifted learners. The district also emphasizes the development of good character traits with its Character Counts. program which encourages students to practice good citizenship skills such as respect for others and responsibility for their own actions. Both school districts are committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students by following safety protocols such as regular drills and emergency response plans.
