According to medicinelearners, Coles County, Illinois is located in the eastern part of the state and was founded in 1831. The county was named after Edward Coles, the second governor of Illinois. The county seat is Charleston, which was founded in 1832 and is now home to Eastern Illinois University. Prior to European settlement, the area that would become Coles County was inhabited by various Native American tribes including the Potawatomi and Kickapoo. In 1818, a treaty between the United States government and these tribes allowed for white settlers to move into the area. By 1830, a few dozen families had made their homes in what would become Coles County. In 1831, Coles County was officially established with its boundaries being defined by the Iroquois River on its east side and the Embarras River on its west side. The county’s population grew rapidly over the next several decades with many settlers coming from nearby states such as Kentucky and Virginia as well as Germany and Ireland. The county’s economy has been largely dependent on agriculture since its founding but it has also been home to several industries including coal mining, manufacturing, lumbering and oil production. The first railroad line arrived in Charleston in 1856 which helped further spur economic growth within the county. Today, Coles County remains a largely rural area with an estimated population of just over 50 thousand people. Agriculture continues to play an important role in the local economy while tourism is becoming increasingly popular thanks to attractions such as Lake Mattoon and Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site.
