According to medicinelearners, Yuma County, Arizona is located in the southwestern corner of the state and is bordered by California and Mexico. It has a rich history that dates back to the late 1700s when it was part of Spanish-controlled Mexico. In 1854, Yuma County was established as one of the original four counties in what would eventually become Arizona Territory. The region’s early economy was largely based on agriculture, with cotton being a major crop. Yuma County also benefitted from its proximity to the Colorado River which provided access to transportation and trade with other parts of the southwest. Additionally, gold was discovered in the area during this time period and this helped spur further development of the region. In 1863, Yuma County officially became part of Arizona Territory and it continued to grow over the next few decades as more settlers moved into the area. The railroad arrived in 1877 and this further opened up trade opportunities for local businesses as well as providing access to new markets for products such as cotton, wheat and wool. Today, Yuma County is an important agricultural center for Arizona as well as a popular tourist destination due to its warm climate and natural beauty. Agriculture remains an important component of its economy with cotton still being a major crop along with vegetables, melons and citrus fruits. Additionally, tourism continues to be an important component of its economy thanks to attractions such as historic sites like Fort Yuma-Quechan Indian Reservation, bird watching along the Colorado River and nearby Lake Havasu State Park. Yuma County is served by three public school districts and several private schools. The Yuma Union High School District covers the largest area, covering most of the county’s population centers including Yuma, Somerton and San Luis. This district operates seven high schools, four middle schools and fourteen elementary schools. It also has an alternative school and a program for adult education. The Yuma Elementary School District operates thirteen elementary schools in the county as well as one middle school and one alternative school. The district is focused on providing a quality education to all students in the area, with an emphasis on preparing them for college or a career after graduation. The Crane School District is located in the eastern part of the county and serves about 1,000 students from kindergarten through eighth grade. It operates two elementary schools and one junior high school as well as offering adult education classes at its Crane Adult Learning Center. In addition to these public districts, there are several private schools in Yuma County including several religious-based institutions such as St. Joseph Catholic School and Calvary Christian Academy. Additionally, there are several charter schools in the area such as Desert View Academy which offers a curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Overall, Yuma County provides students with a variety of educational options that will help them succeed no matter what path they choose after graduation.
