Emory University

History

The university was founded as Emory College in 1836 in Oxford, Georgia by the Methodist Episcopal Church and was named in honor of Methodist Bishop John Emory. In 1915, the college relocated to Metro Atlanta and was renamed Emory University.

In April of 1861, the Civil American War began. Emory College was closed in November of 1861 and all students enrolled. At the end of 1863 the war reached Georgia and the university was used as a hospital and later as a barracks for the Union army. Thirty-five Emory students lost their lives and much of the campus was destroyed during the war.

Like the entire southeastern United States, Emory struggled to overcome the financial devastation during the Age of Reconstruction. In 1880, Atticus Greene Haygood, president of Emory University, delivered a speech expressing gratitude for the end of slavery in the United States, which captured the attention of George I. Seney, a New York banker.

It was the year 1915 that he moved to metropolitan Atlanta Emory University and was renamed Emory University after accepting a land grant from Asa Griggs Candler, founder of The Coca-Cola Company. Emory University School of Law was established in 1916. From the 1920s through the 1970s, Emory University established its reputation as a regional institution offering a strong background in medicine, law, theology, business and the liberal arts.

The United States entered World War I on August 6, 1917. Emory University organized a medical unit composed of medical school professors and alumni of medicine, known as Unit Emory Hospital 43. The unit served in Loir-et-Cher, France from July of 1918 until January of 1919. The Emory Base Unit, Hospital Base 43 was remobilized during WWII and served in the North African and European Campaign. Recognizing Emory’s involvement and effort in the war, a ship was christened MS Emory Victory and served during World War II and in the Korean War.

The institutional program includes 72 university courses, 72 diplomas and 51 doctoral courses, public service and a high quality of teaching.
